Can we talk about how ghosting is WORSE than just telling someone, “No, I don’t want to work with you”?
Also, can we talk about the Washington Post article that just came out about ghosting?
They polled college kids about ghosting and it was…kinda sad, actually. 🫣
Some kids said they ghost others because they don’t have the communication skills to have these hard conversations.
And it doesn’t matter if it was in person or text/email/via some kind of screen.
They *don’t know how to have conversations*. Think about that.
Another reason was to “protect the other person’s feelings.”
One person literally said they thought it was a “more polite” way to reject someone, which I’d argue is actually doing *more* damage.
🫢🤦🏻‍♀️🙅🏻‍♀️
Hearing “No, I’m not interested,” stings a bit in the short term, but then it’s done and over.
You’re not dragging around that energy of still trying to be available for someone who doesn’t want to pursue a relationship, whether personal- or business-wise.
👉🏼Okay so what’s the point here?
There are a few…
1️⃣ Ghosting folks leaves people with a bad taste in their mouth about the ghoster.
Short term, there’s damage from the lack of clarity. They may not feel valued or respected.
Long term, it erodes trust.
And what is business if not built on trust, value, and respect?
If you ask me, that kind of relationship *has* to be built on open, clear communication.
2️⃣ You *must* be able to communicate, especially as a business owner.
Having strong communication skills is essential to building relationships, talking about your services, making offers via sales pages or conversations, and just plain understanding for yourself why you’re doing this.
So, if you ask me, it comes down to knowing what you want from your business, then learning how to talk to others about what they want and structuring your offer in a way that highlights how you can give them what they want.
👉🏼And a big dose of respect.
Respect for yourself, your business, and the people around you that you work with.

Who would you rather work with: the excited person

Who would you rather work with: the excited person or the “I’m here because I have to be” person?
That’s how I feel about this audio.
If that’s what you’re presenting in your marketing, I don’t care HOW much passion you have for the work you do…
….You’re coming across as annoyed, frustrated, rude, and (honestly) entitled.
It’s like you expect to (deign to) market once and have all the riches rain down upon you.
If you’re feeling attacked right now, I get it 🫢🫣 I used to feel like this, too, until my coach pointed out this exact thing.
👉🏼At the end of the day, marketing is a “best foot toward” type of thing.
(Spoiler: you have to tell people about you so they can buy from your business.)
Sure, you can be transparent. *And* think about your audience.
They’re new clients, customers, supporters, referral networking folks.
If you sound annoyed that you have to market your business, your audience will pick it up.
There’s a lot of talk about “IG is making me do this”.
There’s also a lot of talk about making it your own.
(Guess which side I’m on.)
✨Finding your unique approach *while also* working within the boundaries of what your audience needs to hear from you.

Editing. It's so hard to "kill your darlings" but you HAVE to do it if you want...
✨ Strong, compelling copy (and not just "good enough for now" words on a page)

✨A direction and a point that's easy for your audience to follow
Oh, and how about error-free copy that represents you well.
(Which means you can make the impact you want with all the dollars you've got coming your way.)
Your words CAN do that, but you have to cut out the fluff and leave the right ones on the page.
Here's a simple trick to help you do that.
👉🏼Read your copy from bottom to top.
It'll help you catch errors, identify areas that don't make sense, and notice any chunks that run on too long.

Let’s talk about having typos in your copy. 😱
This is based on a true story that just happened to me.
Long story short, I posted something to IG stories and didn’t notice an autocorrect that turned “in” into “I’m.”
I could have gone back, deleted it and reposted it.
But honestly, a couple hours had passed before I realized it and I thought, “Whatever, I’m just going to leave it.”
👉🏼Here’s why…
We’re human! We are human.
We make mistakes. That’s just what we do. In the words of Pam Beesly, “Pobody’s nerfect.”
🫢I’m not saying just whip up a sales page, don’t proofread it, and send it out there, then whine and cry and bitch when no one buys your stuff.
Having a sales page or some really important copy that’s riddled with errors and mistakes is going to punch holes in your credibility.
So what’s the lesson here? It’s two-fold.
☝🏼One: Give yourself some grace. You’re a human, it’s okay.
✌🏼Two: double check your work. Always proofread and then proofread again.
You’re an amazing human and you’re doing the best you can with what you have.
Give yourself a little grace. You got this!

Copywriter confession: I had a typo in an instagram story…and I didn’t fix it. 😱
The shock! The horror!!
Autocorrect got the best of me.
Listen, it happens to all of us.🤷🏻‍♀️
As a copywriter, it’s my job to get words right.
As a human, trying my best…mistakes happen.
Quite the crossroad here!
I could have pulled the story down and reposted it using “in” instead of “I’m”.
I could blame Apple, but I was rushing and it was my fault I didn’t notice it until hours later.
I chose to leave it.
If someone doesn’t want to work with me because of one error in otherwise hundreds of technically correct words, that’s on them.
Honestly, I’m sure if they weren’t happy with that autocorrect and simply couldn’t overlook it despite the value I try to give every time I share something online, whether it’s a funny picture of my dog meant to bring levity or a copywriting tip meant to help you communicate…
…we probably wouldn’t vibe anyway.
Now, I'm not saying *don't* take your writing seriously, especially on something like a sales page or an email - something with a bit more weight to it.
Having a sales page riddled with errors is not confidence-inspiring.
But a flash-in-the-pan Instagram story...?
It's okay to let that go once in a while!
So instead, I’m giving myself grace.✨
And also understanding that the internet and all the stuff we do here is fleeting.
💜And I hope you give yourself grace, too.

How do you make swipe copy…not suck?
As a copywriter, I’ve worked with clients who have received some terrible swipe copy.👀
And I learned very quickly that swipe copy….is not always the “amazing value-packed bonus!” some people claim it is.
I’m sure I’m not alone in that opinion, but I haven’t heard..any…other copywriters talking about swipe copy like this, so here goes.
👉🏼If you’re going to use swipe copy, you have to learn how to make it your own.
Just a few tweaks will take it from “this sounds generic and there’s already 10 of the same thing in my customers’ inboxes” to…
…jam packed with personality (and someone else did the hard work of writing the lion’s share of it).🎉🎉
✅To do this yourself just add in your personality!
Drop some Office references, a GIF you always send, and your most-used emojis.

We've all heard "Show instead of tell" when writing...for a reason.
It resonates!
People pick up on the cues and can "see" it rather than being "preached to" about how fun it is to work with you.
For example, I was doing a VIP Messaging Strategy Intensive with a client and she was trying to convey that they're friendly and welcoming but not "small town out-of-touch."
So instead of saying, "Are you so busy that you do not have the time to think about your branding?"...
...She could say "Does your business feel like a dog learning to swim for the first time with all 4 legs going at warp speed trying to stay above water? If so, I bet 'branding' isn't even on your mind."
Which one stands out to you?

Here's how you can show instead of tell in your copy:
📝Use metaphors and similes (busier than a one-legged man at an ass-kicking contest, scrambling like a dog learning to swim, smoother than a bowl of pasta alfredo).
So simple, but so effective!

Paraphrasing here, but basically... she’s always said she patterned her look after the “town tramp.”
People said “Oh she’s nothing but trash,” but Dolly thought she was the prettiest thing she’s ever seen and said, “That’s what I want to be when I grow up.”
🔔 Here’s why I bring that up.
Dolly was told not to look “cheap.” But she thought this woman with the big hair and makeup was so glamourous.
So she said to hell with it and did it her way. And LOOK at where that got her.
Imagine what would happen if you did things your way.
Spoiler…you can!
💜You can do whatever you want.
💜Write your copy however you want.
💜Surround yourself with people who encourage and empower you to do it however you want.

Recovery time makes you better.
If you don’t take time for rest and to repair, you won’t be your best.
Cliche, yes 🙄
Have you heard it before? Also yes 🤷🏻‍♀️
But it’s overused and oversaid for a reason!
Time to rest is not a reward. It isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity.
And if you don’t believe me or don’t think you have time to rest, that’s when you need it the most.
If you have the privilege, take the recoveries. In a workout, in life, in your job, with yourself.
And, of course, with your writing.
I’m not saying, “Write only when you’re inspired.”
It has to be a daily practice and habit like anything else.
And when you pause to make your writing just for you for a bit, you’ll rediscover ideas and find new ways to share them.
For me, this looks like solidifying the details of the 3-D Copywriting Method (yep it’s new!).
The goal is to help creative business owners move from chaos to clarity in their messaging *and* solidify the pesky details they need to figure out in their strategy.
The result is a compelling message that feels exactly like them. There’s finally the confidence that what they're creating is so magnetic to their audience.

Storytelling is all about connection, moving the action forward, and creating emotions.⁠
👆🏼Selling CAN do that, too, but don't confuse storytelling content with sales copy.
(Y’all know my soapbox about content not being the same as copy.)
The purpose of telling a story isn't to line your wallet.⁠
It’s to create a connection that shows people why you are the one to listen to and gets them excited to hear about the sales invitation you’ll one day make.
When in doubt, ask yourself: What’s the goal?

When in doubt, do something. It’s better than doing nothing.
I learned a handy phrase from Alexandra Franzen a few years ago.
👉🏼Today isn’t over yet.
Small steps. Something is better than nothing. Today isn’t over yet, so there’s still time to make progress.
I applied both of these ideas this month. I made a goal to post every weekday in June.
Some posts were planned. Some were born from an “oh crap, I have to post something” desire to keep the streak going.
Some posts focused on copywriting and business. Some were pure dad jokes.
What’s the point?
Small steps make big habits.
Ten minutes at a time add up to great progress.
I’d like to think I not only formed a new habit but that I taught you something about the skill of communication for your business.
Those were my goals at least!
Today isn’t over yet. What can you still do to take one step toward your goals?

The more you practice your writing, the more clear you get on what you want to say and how you say it.
You also get better at knowing the words and tone YOU want to use but also what’ll connect with your audience.
So. Okay. Maybe journaling IS the answer to everything.

If the copy on your website is old, blehhh, and totally cringe, it’s time for an overhaul. Here's how to know when it's time to update your website copy.
1️⃣ Your leads are as dry as overcooked pork chops.
This could mean your copy is confusing, generic, and/or doesn't show your value and HOW you can help your ideal clients who are landing on your site.
Could also mean you need to adjust the cook temp or length of your cuts of meat.
2️⃣ You've changed.
How I talk about copywriting, what it means for you as a business owner...all of that NOW is vastly different than how I talked about it in 2018.
If your offers, audience, perspectives, etc, have changed, it needs to be reflected on your site so your visitors know whether you can help them.
3️⃣ Your website isn't converting.
People come to your site to see how you can help them. If your website isn't converting, you probably aren't telling people what you can do for them and why they should care.
Nodding along to any of these signs? It's time to update your website copy.

Heartbroken and absolutely disgusted by today’s news. (Although not surprised tbh, which is the real heartbreaker.)
I’m not sure that reproducing is in the cards for me, but if it is and that happens, you damn well better believe *I* want to have total say over what I will and won’t do with my body.
Having autonomy over our choices—whether financial, emotional, physical, etc—should be a right of life. And the fact that we are here, that we’ve been shoved backward in time, is maddening to say the absolute least.
There will be more to say. There’s absolutely more to do. For today, we feel our feelings so we can emerge tomorrow with the energy to fight.
Because this isn’t just about women’s and birthing folks’ reproductive rights (dear god, the fact that we are even here having this convo is terrifying)—it’s about the rights humans have over their own bodies.

I believe that we are able to heal ourselves through stories. Being able to write about things or somehow creatively express yourself allows you to know yourself even more.⁠⠀

Because it's just you and the page. There's no hiding, no running away.⁠⠀

Then, once you dive in with yourself, you can start opening up with others.⁠⠀

Forming a relationship with yourself first is the best way to learn how to form relationships with others.⁠⠀

It also is how you can learn to express your feelings and make a true connections.⁠⠀

When you start to open up to others with that story, you'll find commonalities that lead to genuine feelings for another human.⁠⠀

Story is what MAKES those deep solid connections.⁠⠀

To be a good writer, be a good reader.
Read books you usually wouldn’t pick up, old favorites you can read with your eyes closed, books that challenge your thinking, open your perspective, inspire, and entertain.
But under no circumstances are you to feel pressured to finish a book that isn’t grabbing you.
(Trust me, I’ve lost hours of my life forcing myself to read books I wasn’t into. Give up the ghost.)

Even though I've been sharing a lot more about copy, website updates, and preparing your strategy for that, I'm still a human (and a business owner) who thinks a lot about mindset and being healthy and happy.
(After all, if we aren't taking care of ourselves, we can't fully show up for our clients, so doesn't every business owner think a lot about mindset and stuff or is that just me?)
Anyway...
Summer, to me, feels full of possibility with a focus on being healthy and happy.
It carries the desire to BE... we are human BEings, not human DOings.
And today marks a transition from action to nourishment.
We've planted the seeds, now it's time for them to grow as we tend what we've planted in anticipation for a fruitful harvest.
Y'all. I know it sounds like I copied and pasted that, but I didn't. Just the power of journaling and lots of coffee at work.
Since this is a time of nourishment, why don't we do something to help ourselves grow.
It could look like...
☀️ Forming a new habit
☀️ Trying something you've always wanted to do
☀️ Diving deep into self-reflective practices like mindset, therapy, journaling, meditation
☀️Taking care of you and your needs so you can be a happy, healthy human

A past copywriting coaching client told me she stu

A past copywriting coaching client told me she stuck a Post It on her computer that said “Because Why” on it when we were working together.
She said she’d read it in my voice while she was writing.
Why?
When I work with copywriting coaching clients, I’ll review their docs and leave comments and usually record a Loom to explain something more in-depth.
In one Loom, I kept hitting her over the head with the concept of “Because why…?”
She did a great job of writing with personality, but she wasn’t fully connecting her words with what it had to do with / for her audience.
It isn’t enough to say “Do this thing.” Your audience will be all, “You can’t tell me to do anything” and scroll by.
That’s why you need to really hit the Because Why.
💡💡Help them connect the dots.
Tell them WHY they should care and pay attention to what you’re saying.
📝How will it help them?
📝Why are you recommending this technique, tip, action, etc?
📝What pain point will it alleviate / what desire will it deliver?
And put it in words that they will relate to (AKA What’s In It For Me?).
